everyday magic: a study of the occult in Jakarta

In June 2009 I travelled to Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia. Being there, in a hot and crowded place full of differences and contradictions, raised my interest in the different ways people live with and within this city. In Jakarta, there is an omnipresent and strong belief in ‘magic’ – although this belief is often questioned. I became more and more interested in the role ‘magic’ plays within this modern city and I got in contact with three people who practice ‘magic’. I talked with them for many hours about the nature of their practice and their involvement with magic, took portraits, and photographed them in their domestic environments.
